In conjunction with the Virginia Fire Officer’s Academy, the Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives Program (a program of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation) is presenting a Safety Through Leadership resident training course this summer. The Academy will be held at the prestigious Jepson School of Leadership Studies on the campus of the University of Richmond (VA). The Virginia Fire Officers Academy steering committee has developed a challenging curriculum coupled with nationally recognized known speakers and instructors, including Alan Brunacini, John Salka, John Sullivan, and Paul LeSage among others. The Safety Through Leadership training course is intended to further the goals of the Everyone Goes Home® Program and the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives.
The Safety Through Leadership course is funded through the NFFF’s Fire Act Grant and is, therefore, not restricted to Virginia residents. A limited number of applicants will be accepted from fire service personnel across the United States. Participants will be responsible for their own travel, but all costs associated with room, board, and instructional materials will be funded through the Academy.
Career and volunteer fire department company officers, or those poised and eligible to be company officers are encouraged to apply for this unique and challenging opportunity. This curriculum is intended to give you the tools necessary to reduce firefighter injuries and prevent line-of-duty deaths. This may be the most important training you receive in your career.
Applications for admission must be completed in their entirety and include the signature of the sponsoring agency’s Fire Chief and/or department head. Completed applications for admission should be mailed to: Virginia Fire Chiefs Association c/o Virginia Fire Officers Academy Admissions, P.O. Box 70907, Richmond, Virginia 23255-0907. Applications must be post marked no later than April 13, 2007 and received no later than April 17, 2007. Applications received after April 17, 2007 will only be considered if openings occur. Notification of selected participants will be made on May 4, 2007.
