Over the past few months, there have been an alarming number of firefighter fatalities. In light of that, we do want to remind every operational firefighter, company officer, crew boss, superintendent, and command officer about the importance of situational awareness, evaluation of risk, value of risk as compared to the likelihood of success and the all-important desire of your family, loved one’s and friends that they want every firefighter to go home at the end of their tour of duty.
Dr. Jahnke presented the keynote address, “Health, Wellness, and Readiness in the Fire Service,” as part of the Research Symposium sponsored by Fire Protection Publications immediately prior to the IFSTA Validation Conference. The Granito Award is presented annually to an individual who has significantly advanced the fire leadership and management literature through their research efforts.
Dr. Greene was recognized in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the annual IFSJLM Research Symposium. During the opening session, Dr. David A. Greene received the Prize and presented a paper on the findings of his recent dissertation research.
The report lists 10 things firefighters can do to reduce cardiovascular disease. While much of it is common sense, the hope is the work being done by this group will put a new focus on keeping firefighters healthy so they can fight fires and save lives.

The NFFF is collecting short biographies to be published in its new book, American Firefighter. We will interview these people, write their stories and send a fantastic photographer to capture them in all their uniqueness!
In support of the program the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) developed the Firehero Learning Network, the official online training program that allows the fire service to receive free online training.
The National Stair Climb, scheduled for October 10 at Citi Field, will expand the scope of this tradition to remember all of America’s fallen firefighters, and is the first event of its kind to take place in New York City with the support of the FDNY.
