At one time or another, most little boys want to be either a policeman or a firefighter. My brother, Peter, was fortunate enough to be both. When Peter was only ten years old, he knew he wanted to help people.

Nancy Casiano-Rosario
In the wee hours of May 3, 1999, my world would come to an end, as I knew it. I married my childhood sweetheart. We married at the age of 16, and had twin girls. Eric and my girls became the center of my world. Eric went into the fire academy February 19, 1992, looking for a better life for his family.

Allyson Coglianese
Murphy
My father, Edmond P. Coglianese, was a Lieutenant with the Chicago Fire Department. He gave his life, the ultimate sacrifice, doing what he loved and serving the citizens of Chicago on January 26th, 1986. He saw to the safe exit of several residents during an arson related fire at a transient hotel before returning again to search for more victims and succumbing to smoke inhalation and burns.

John and Marie Collins
Brian was born January 28,1964 in Staten Island N.Y. As a very active young man, he was a volunteer firefighter from the age of 16 until his death in February 1999. He was accepted as a Fort Worth firefighter before he was 21, and as an instructor in the USAF reserves at their fire academy, Brian had his nephew Christopher Johnson, now on the Euless, TX fire department, as one of his students.

Jo Ann Gettman
Matt was born at home on Ruby Drive in Lakeport on July 18, 1978. He was a graduate of Clear Lake High School class of 1997. During his years at Clear Lake High School he was a member both of the Sheriff's Department Explorers and the Lakeport Fire Department Explorers. For a while during his senior year he was torn between becoming a policeman or a fireman.

Christine Groff
Tanker 87, Lawrence Lafayette Groff, (Larry), born June 17, 1946, in Clinton, Missouri, died tragically and bravely fighting a fire in a Grumman S-2A after colliding with colleague Lars Stratte. Both perished on August 27, 2001 when their tankers collided over a wildfire in Hopland, CA allegedly started by a methanphetamine lab operated by the Hells Angels.

The sun rose on Sunday, July 28, 1996 with the promise of a hot, summer day in North Carolina. Our family had returned from Church and was preparing for a lazy afternoon at home when a thunderstorm rolled through our community. At the height of the storm, the Fire Alarm sounded from our Fire Station.

Cathy Hedrick
Cathy Hedrick's son, Kenny, was killed on January 12, 1992, while responding to a local fire. They were the first ones on the scene; expectations were high as there were people still in the burning house. With adrenaline pumping, Kenny went into the burning house, alone. Going into a burning house alone is not what he was trained to do, but lives were at jeopardy.

It was a warm Sunday morning in August of 1998. My son and I were on our way to church when we met the fire truck on their way to a fire. I looked in the truck and there was Larry and his brother, Henry Lee, on their way to the fire, with Larry blowing the horn.

The last thing that Harold J. (Jimmy) Lyons, Sr. did before he died on October 30, 1992 was help save a total stranger who was injured in a car crash. But then helping others was a way of life for the popular Brookhaven Fire Commissioner and Ambulance volunteer.

Stephen was a firefighter long before he was appointed to the Boston Fire Department in October of 1974. He was the third generation of Minehan firefighters in Boston. His grandfather, Mike Minehan, was a Chief.

Roger Nadeau
I became involved with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation when my brother, Gerald Nadeau, died in the line of duty from lung failure. Gerry was a career District Fire Chief with 25 years of service with the Fall River, Massachusetts, Fire Department.

Sharon Purdy
My husband of almost thirty-five years died in the line of duty on January 8, 2000. That cold January night he responded to a structure fire in our small town with our volunteer fire department. He had been operating the pumper and was found on the ground unconscious but breathing. On the way into the hospital, we lost Lee. Despite the best efforts of the hospital, my best friend and husband was gone.

Al and Maureen Santora
Christopher Santora was a probationary firefighter in the New York City Fire Department. He was assigned to Engine 54, Battalion 9 on 48th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan. He died on September 11, 2001 during the World Trade Center attack. Christopher was 23 years old when he died.

Neil was the ultimate public servant. A volunteer firefighter since he was 13 years old, a sheriff's deputy for 8 years, and a nationally-registered EMT the last year and a half.

Helen Reiner Worthen
Helen Reiner Worthen, of Los Angeles, California, is the mother of Eric F. Reiner, a 10-year career firefighter/paramedic with the City of Los Angeles Fire Department. On March 23, 1998, Eric died in a helicopter crash while airlifting a young girl who had been seriously injured in an auto accident. The three paramedics and the young girl they were transporting died when the helicopter crashed due to rotor failure.
