On June 1, 2 and 3, 2005, the first National Fire Service Research Agenda Symposium was conducted at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Symposium was conducted by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and funded by a grant from the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) through the Center for Fire Research.
In 2011, the 2nd National Fire Service Research Agenda Symposium was held May 20 -22, 2011 and was also hosted by NFFF at the National Emergency Training Center. The project was funded by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The purpose of each symposium was to produce documents that would identify and prioritize the areas where research efforts should be directed to support improvements in firefighter life safety. The emphasis on efforts to address firefighter safety and health concerns coincides with the mission of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, as well as the goal of the United States Fire Administration to reduce line-of-duty deaths.
These resulting documents are intended to assist the many different organizations and individuals that have a role in conducting, supporting and encouraging research projects to focus their efforts and resources on the areas that have been identified as important and significant by a group that represents the diverse interests and priorities of the fire service - all with the overarching goal of eliminating preventable firefighter line-of-duty-injuries and fatalities.
