IFSTA Executive Director Wieder speaks to a topic he has championed for his entire career — the absolute need for safe response policies. Responding to the emergency scene, he notes, is the most dangerous things a firefighter engages in, whether it’s one response or dozens in a single day. In this Speak Up, Director Wieder implores the fire service to develop response policies that strategically consider when firefighters should travel in emergent mode and when it is more prudent to travel non-emergent to calls for service. The interesting observation he makes is that a crew is statistically more likely to get into a significant accident than make a significant save when they arrive on the scene.
“Agencies need to look at their response policies and determine which calls really justify responding at an emergency rate.” – Mike Wieder
